Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are much finer than those used for vaccinations and blood tests. Upon insertion, you may feel a slight pinch, or nothing at all. Once inserted, you may feel a slight tingle, or a dull ache. This disappears as soon as the needle is removed. The treatment produces a feeling of relaxation, most patients enjoy it and look forward to the next.

2. Are there any adverse side-effects?

Some patients feel slightly tired on the day of treatment, or the following day. Acupuncture can be used alongside prescribed medications and treatments.

3. Do I have to get undressed?

Generally, to enable access to the appropriate acupuncture points, top layers need to be removed and sometimes skirts or trousers, but not underwear.

4. How many treatments will I need?

The total number of treatments needed will depend on the type of problem and the patient's own general health. Acute problems may clear in a couple of treatments, but chronic problems will require more. Even so improvements should be noticed within three to five treatments.

5. Do you have to be ill to have treatment?

No, acupuncture can be used as a preventative treatment. Many patients choose to have an annual ’MOT’ or a seasonal top up as appropriate.

6. Can children be treated?

Yes, children respond very quickly and usually need only a few treatments.

7. Is traditional Chinese acupuncture the same as given in

the pain clinics?

Generally, acupuncture given in pain clinics is more symptomatic, and treatments follow a standard pattern. In Traditional Acupuncture, treatment is tailored to the individual. As every patient has a different constitution, and a different collection of signs and symptoms, so every treatment is unique! The advantage of treating the root of the problem is that the results are better and last a lot longer. Treatment that’s as individual as you are!
